Samsung isn’t exactly known for timely updates. The South Korean tech company, along with the likes of Motorola and HTC, have received major flak for rolling updates several months after Google releases a new platform update. Worse, most devices fail to receive any updates at all, stuck on the firmware they shipped with. However, it seems Samsung may be turning over a maple leaf. According to a press release, our neighbors north of the border may be finally getting a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich.

Canadian owners are in luck. Samsung aims to update a slew of their popular Galaxy smartphones and tablets released last year to Android 4.0. While other countries may have looked to custom ROMs for their Ice Cream Sandwich fix , Samsung Canada has notified their users to expect  the updates to roll out to their devices this week.

“We are passionate about providing the best possible mobile experience to Canadians and the upgrade to Android 4.0 will offer an improved user experience for Samsung GALAXY devices,” said Paul Brannen, Vice President, Mobile Communications at Samsung Canada. “We expect that our customers will enjoy an enhanced experience with their GALAXY device through this upgrade and we remain committed, alongside our carrier partners, to satisfy our customer’s needs”.

As Canadian blog Mobile Syrup has pointed out, Samsung wasn’t exactly clear what carriers would receive the new firmware.  Though they have stated that “The availability and scheduling of the software upgrade and specific models upgradable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and wireless carriers’ requirements. For carrier specific details, please visit your nearest carrier retailer”. Again it seems as if the tug of war of responsibilities for timely updates continues as manufacturer insists the the delay rests solely in major carriers.

  1. And why not the Galaxy Tab 10.1 ? at May 03, 2012 03:10:50

What about the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 ? That’s the tablet I have, and other sites were telling about the availability of ICS for the 10.1. However, this was for non-rooted tablets, and so O put my tablet back to factory mode, un-rooted. Even there, the only available upgrade was Android 3.2, which installed fine. But there was no Android 4 available. I have the WiFi edition, which should actually be simpler and easier to upgrade.

Im so done and tired of Samsung and there lack of support for there products. Never again will I buy a Samsung tablet, I had to depend on online communities to get ICS. Asus and Acer at least listen to the consumers unlike this company. Love the tablet but hate the lack of support we are getting. Its stuff like this that make me want to get an ipad, at least with Apple you get what you pay for and more…

I know exactly what you mean. While I’m patiently waiting for the Nexus tablet so I can receive the update directly from Google.
